90 years of Lasipalatsikortteli

The jubilee kicks off with a screening of Chaplin’s classic film from 1936.

The Lasipalatsikortteli celebrates 90 years of history in 2026. We will celebrate the anniversary by highlighting the stories and creators of the quarter and offering events open to the public throughout the year.

The year kicks off in March with a classic film, when the Lasipalatsi Bio Rex screens Charles Chaplin’s film Modern Times on 1 March and 8 March at 14:00. Modern Times was already a part of Bio Rex 90 years ago in 1936, in the then brand new movie theatre. When it opened, it was the most modern cinema in the Nordic countries. To celebrate the anniversary, tickets for the classic film cost just €5, tickets gilda.fi. The festive screenings are organised by Gilda and Lasipalatsikortteli.

Opened in 1936, the Lasipalatsi was originally built as a temporary building for the 1940 Olympics. The building was supposed to be removed after the Games, but the modernist landmark remained a permanent part of Helsinki’s cityscape. Over the decades, the Lasipalatsi has been a place of commerce, entertainment and media history, hosting television programmes by Yleisradio and MTV3, among others. The Lasipalatsi Quarter consists of the Lasipalatsi, the Kulttuurikasarmi building, renovated in 2023, and the Lasipalatsi Square. Together, they create a living entity where history meets the present.

More information on the anniversary programme will follow in the Spring, with plenty of events and products planned. The Lasipalatsikortteli invites residents and visitors to join in the celebration of a 90-year-old story that is still going strong.
