Since 1945, Moomin stories have inspired people around the world with their messages of inclusiveness, kindness and togetherness. To mark the anniversary, Moomin Characters returns to the first Moomin story written by Tove Jansson, The Moomins and the Great Flood. At the heart of the story is the Moomin House, which offers shelter, comfort and security – universal needs that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago. Under the theme “The door is always open”, new and old fans are invited to join Moomin80 celebrations around the world. The celebrations include charity events, fan competitions, exhibitions and new releases of books, films and products.
A year full of special events
Several exhibitions focusing on the Moomins and Tove Jansson have already been seen during 2025, such as From Moomin to Chop Chop at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm, The Moomin Valley at the Łódź Film Museum, Poland (22.5.-23.11.2025); Tove Jansson’s Forest of Drawings at ASCE, Hong Kong (22.11.-5.1.2025); touring Moomin exhibition at Mori Arts Center Gallery, Japan (7/2025-6/2027); and Artist Life, a biographical exhibition of Tove Jansson at the Moomin Museum in Tampere. The year will culminate in an exhibition at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Helsinki in October 2025, which will explore Jansson’s distinctive approach to architecture and design and how she created both imaginative and physical spaces.
Moomins are in fashion
During the year, Moomin Characters will also collaborate with well-known fashion houses and designers. In November 2024, a major partnership with the Urban Outfitters chain was launched. In addition, Finnish furniture design classic Artek and Moomin Characters celebrated their double anniversary by launching a new Artek + Moomin collection in March 2025, and a separate Moomin-themed collection for the brand tao by Comme des Garçons in 2025. The Moomin collection by Swedish brand Acne also received a lot of attention in early 2025.

Lasipalatsikortteli’s Moomin Shop is a treasure trove for Moomin lovers. Henna Ahvenjärvi , Moomin Shop’s store manager, says that the most popular products all year round are mugs, socks and key rings. During the winter months they also sell a lot of hats and in summer caps. What is the key to the Moomins’ popularity?
– The world of the Moomins is wonderful and imaginative. The characters are relatable and the stories’ values resonate: friendship, love, equal acceptance of all, says Henna Ahvenjärvi, naming Moominpappa as her favourite character.
